The United States’ Health System ranks third in the world in health. This means that improving your health is important regardless of where you live. A diet full of unhealthy fats leads to poor overall health. In areas with low living standards, individuals living in single-income households are most likely in need of assistance. For older adults, diabetes and other chronic health conditions affect them the most because they have fewer resources available. They also tend to have lower incomes because their jobs are usually less risky as well. According to The American Psychological Association (APA), “Dietary risks for type 2 diabetes are high in populations under 55 and in those who earn less than $25,000 per year”. Even if people don’t have diabetes, it can be very hard for them to maintain a good physical appearance when compared to others. If one doesn’t exercise regularly or eat healthy foods without adequate nutrition, they will continue to deteriorate in old age as more age-related diseases become more prevalent and people lose interest in maintaining or increasing their physical appearance. Healthy eating includes a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and foods that make positive contributions to one’s overall nutritional needs. However, there are many myths regarding how much food we should eat (6.5 servings of fruit and vegetables and 5 portions of protein). Some people think about consuming only 3 or 4 servings of meat; instead, they should consume 5 servings of chicken or 6 servings of fish and 7 servings of eggs. People must understand that proper eating habits can prevent weight gain during aging. Having too few calories and not consuming enough nutrients can cause individuals to retain excess pounds they would prefer to shed. It is also common for older adults to want to preserve muscle mass they developed over their lifetime. In addition to these factors, another myth is that older adults should stay away from alcohol. Alcohol will contribute to older adults getting older and decreasing their mobility. However, young adults should not start drinking at an early age as this may negatively impact the rest of their body. There are different types of alcohol, including wine, beer and spirits. The key is to make sure that you are having appropriate amounts of the right amount of alcohol. Many drinks contain ethanol, which is an alcoholic beverage that contains a lot of sugar content and preservatives. One cup of black coffee contains 0.42 grams of caffeine. When compared to regular coffee, black coffee has approximately 0.08 grams of caffeine per cup. Black coffee is very similar to normal coffee because both contain carbohydrates. This is especially important for older adults who have less financial options to maintain their health. Additionally, seniors who are more independent due to being disabled, elderly or who do not have a spouse who has a stable job have little to no support systems that would help them maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle requires everyone to eat a healthy diet and to take care of themselves as well. Individuals should be aware of what constitutes “healthy life style” and try to incorporate healthy eating habits into their daily activities so that the choices they make will benefit all their organs.
